It is a strange anomaly that though the Soviets found and opened up the main 'death camps' they were amazingly crap at recording anything of any value to support their wild claims of millions dying in the same camps. If you take Auschwitz for example not only did they never find and photograph a working gas chamber but they waited for about two weeks I think before staging various pictures of inmates and infrastructure. Very odd indeed. I mean why did they not have a battlefield press photographer on hand when they walked through the front gates to capture everything as it was left by the Germans? Why did they make astonishing claims of mountains of human cremains being spread in the fields and thrown in massive piles into the local river and use these pictures as evidence to back up their delayed and monumental stories?

It is not curious if you studied the Soviet and Stalin's reaction to the Holocaust. They largely ignored it, as it was they, not the Jews, who were the main victims of the Nazis. There was no Soviet history of the Holocaust, or memorial to it. Stalin never spoke about it. Only a few Holocaust related trials were run in the Soviet Union and they were mainly for Ukrainians who had been in the SS. They left the Polish to do most of the evidence gathering, interviewing witnesses, surveying the AR camp sites and preserving Auschwitz.
So-called revisionists like to suggest it was a Soviet hoax, but it was the Polish who did most of the reporting, evidencing and memorialising. But even the most die hard conspiracist, could not convince themselves that the Poles fooled the world with a fake Holocaust, so they pretend the fakery was by the Soviets. Then, like you, when they find out how little the Soviets did, they act all surprised.
You are right about them being badly organised. They tried to push grossly exaggerated death tolls, that Western historians ignored. They came up with the most outlandish atrocity claims after the war, with skin lampshades etc. Then they tried to hoax Katyn and failed.
