Do you really think that Judaism recognizes only the written Torah, and even then only what is written, discarding what lies behind that writing? Or do you think that these recent forms of Judaism (Reform, Reconstructionist, Conservative) represent the essence of Judaism?
For any rabbi devoted to the Torah will never simply cite prophecy and leave it at that; therefore, this prophecy has indeed been used to validate its fulfillment in history.
It is worth mentioning that the ancient scribes themselves corrupted the Hebrew text in compromising passages called Tiqqun soferim, using corrections to soften the expression. In other words, they deliberately created norms and used passages to validate their religion.
