If it is an hdd style device, I've been able to recover my data by putting the drive in a freezer for a few hours to get the armature to stick to the grease on the pin so I can stripe the data out one last time before. You only get about an hour or two to work with it though.
This is part of the reason that I transitioned to micro sd cards. They are tiny, they are cheap and they are stable. They also hold gobs of memory. Half a terabyte for $17.00 if you catch them on sale. I stick to buying PNY, sandisk and other reputable brands.
I have run R.A.I.D. systems in the past. At this point, I have completely moved away from desktops though. Sometimes I miss the old clicky clack of a keyboard. There is a lot I don't miss though.
