pilgrimofdark wrote: Wed Jun 17, 2026 7:20 pm The Warsaw Ghetto: A Guide to the Perished City has a long section on typhus. Since the book is expensive and not online, points of interest are below:

There were two waves of typhus in the Warsaw ghetto:
  • first half of 1940 (large influx of refugees from areas annexed to Germany)
  • first half of 1941 (influx of refugees from western district of Warsaw)
Three groups of insect pest controllers were set up, each with four pest-eradication columns. A column was made up of twelve Jewish and six Polish sanitary workers and was under the supervision of German pest controllers and Polish doctors. Each column was also accompanied by a Jewish doctor and a Polish and Jewish policeman.
Around August 1941, the Judenrat set up the Health Council, which was led by Professor Ludwik Hirszfeld.

Official numbers counted 15,449 cases of typhus. Counting people hiding their illness, the estimated real number was 110,000 to 150,000 cases.

The soap was low quality "hard soap" or "gray soap," which contained a lower percentage of fatty acids than regular soap. People at the bathhouses were given very small amounts of it to clean themselves.

There were five public bathhouses in the ghetto. At least one bath outside the ghetto was also used by Jews who were escorted there and back.

It's claimed the SS men escorting Jews to bathhouses would sometimes fire randomly into the crowd.

The widespread attitude was that the German methods of combating the epidemic only served to spread the disease further. Hospitals were overcrowded, whole buildings were quarantined, and the sanitary columns and doctors were corrupt. The public baths also took bribes to issue certificates without a person being cleaned. The sulfer was too weak to kill the lice. People in quarantined houses would bribe their way out so they could work or acquire food. Because everyone in a house had to be bathed, they were standing in lines for hours at a time, where the lice could spread to healthy people.

The apartments where people suffering from typhus were discovered were chosen for the sulfur gassing. Belongings from potentially clean apartments were brought into the infected apartment, thereby spreading lice if the sulfur was not strong enough.

Until fall of 1941, treating typhus at home could lead to imposition of the death penalty. An illegal private hospital was set up in the ghetto.

The book cites memoirs diaries by Hirszfeld, Adam Czerniaków (head of the Judenrat), Ringelblum, and others. Also cited is Courage Under Siege: Starvation, Disease, and Death in the Warsaw Ghetto, which is online from the usual suspects, but I haven't read yet.

It should also be noted that Samuel Crowell's The Gas Chamber of Sherlock Holmes discusses the issue of immigrant Jewish attitudes and misconceptions about bathing/disinfection in New York as early as the 1890s: believing they were going to be killed, starving themselves in quarantine due to no kosher food, hiding cases of typhus.
Wetzelrad wrote: Wed Jun 17, 2026 4:52 pmIf a bunch of Warsaw Jews were already afraid of being "steamed" to death, and then they were transferred to or gained knowledge of Treblinka, they may have transported that fear there, creating the legend.
I'll get back to the other points, but this one is interesting because of the inversion.

At Treblinka, Warsaw Jews were allegedly calmed down by being told they would be sent to the Ukraine for work after they bathed.

Sequence of events:
  1. blockades & merciless beatings on the journey to the train station, cripples and elderly shot
  2. calming speech about being resettled for work
  3. merciless beating to get onto the trains
  4. starvation, suffocation, dehydration on the 3-day train ride; occasionally punctuated by Latvians, Lithuanians, or Ukrainians entering the trains to rob people; SS and guards firing randomly into the trains
  5. merciless beating of the 1-20% who survived to get out of the trains
  6. calming speech about being bathed and sent to Ukraine for work
  7. merciless beating into the barracks
  8. undressing, shaving, turning over currency, getting a receipt
  9. merciless beating through the "tube"
  10. calming speech at the bathhouse
  11. merciless beating to shove as many people into the bathhouse as possible
Only at Step 11 did the Jews suspect anything was wrong.

(Yes, this is the process Arad, Chrostowski, and others describe, based on the eyewitnesses cited.)

Wait, you think at step 11 according to the orthodoxy they knew something was wrong? I thought it was at step 12 when the door closed and chlorine was tossed in through the roof hatch or whatever.

Good catch, was rushing. I made a couple fixes in orange.

This is difficult to watch. It goes to show how much racial grievance and atrocity can be spun up out of the mundane application of disease prevention. "The Jail Holocaust", give me a break.
I know. It's amazing to see how the Jew-owned academia and media of the West can turn literally anything and everything (even giving Brown people a job and saving their lives by delousing them!!) into anti-White atrocity propaganda! They systematically portray any White-on-Brown (and White-on-Black, White-on-Asian, White-on-Jew, etc.) action as something evil. White bashing never ends...

Encompassing everything,
  • the orchestra drowned out
  • the screams, which drowned out
  • the machinery, which drowned out
  • the excavators, which drowned out
  • the shootings, which drowned out
  • the circus;
and
  • the Christmas tress obscured
  • the fences, which obscured
  • the Christmas trees, which obscured
  • the smoke, which obscured
  • the fires, which obscured
  • the approximately 3.5 million corpses;
and
  • all of the witnesses remember Wiernik,
  • none of the witnesses remember each other,
  • Wiernik remembers none of the witnesses;
and
  • three chlorine hatches under the sky,
  • seven excavators digging halls of stone,
  • nine new boilers for those doomed to die,
  • One first-person eyewitness account for Rachel Auerbach on her dark typewriter,
  • in the fields of Treblinka where the shadows lie.
  • One first-person eyewitness account to rule them all, three scribes to work it out to their satisfaction.
  • One Lodz writers group to bring them all, and in the darkness read aloud each other's testimony to remind them and jog their memory of well-known events
in the fields of Treblinka where the shadows lie.

This all probably belongs in a different thread, but I'm not sure which one.

Apologies for how stupid this post was.

pilgrimofdark wrote: Tue Jun 16, 2026 8:01 pm Almost all of the accounts report the bribery to avoid disinfection/baths, and that the entire process was more likely to spread lice than kill them.
Does that second claim sound true, or does it sound like a self-serving justification for their behavior? I am definitely sympathetic to anyone who wants to resist forced quarantine procedures, but I find it hard to believe that any of the processes described could make the situation worse than it already was. I would even be inclined to believe that something like sulfur was ineffective -- not counterproductive -- but since Bermanis reported it did kill pests, who am I to disagree?

It seems likely that these justifications were largely or purely stories these Jews were telling to insulate themselves from responsibility.
My conclusion for now is that it was likely a combination of truth and self-justifications.

The sulfur handler reports that they were given low-quality, ineffective sulfur for around two weeks. It wouldn't light or had trouble staying lit. Manufacturing defect? General wartime shortages? Either way, news of a batch of ineffective disinfectants could spread, reinforcing beliefs that the whole process was useless, leading to even more resistance.

Because bundles of bedding/belongings were taken from various apartments and put into one "sulfur chamber," if that was ineffective, the lice from the dirtiest bundles could have spread.

Samuel Crowell cites the book Quarantine (Howard Markel), which discusses the "culture shock" among Russian Jewish immigrants in New York during the 1890s typhus outbreak. They hid cases of the disease, didn't want to quarantine, starved themselves because the quarantine centers didn't have kosher food, believed the bathing facilities were slaughterhouses, etc. Especially for rural Polish-Jewish refugees in Warsaw, were these beliefs much different by the 1940s?

Certainly, if the Jews/Poles/Germans were willing to take bribes to allow Jews to avoid bathing or disinfection, it's a sabotage of the entire process.

I mentioned the Krochmalna Street operation above, but The Warsaw Ghetto: A Guide to the Perished City has more detail on just how impossible the situation likely was. Would anything have been effective here?
Kroshmalna Street was a center of poverty in the ghetto, a synonym for poverty, a breeding ground for disease. [...] On 7 May 1940, Kroshmalna Street was again closed off. Thirty new cases of typhus had been confirmed. The rubbish had not been removed from there for nine months. Twenty buildings and about 20,000 inhabitants were cut off from the world for twenty-three days. The sanitary activities proved an opportunity for corruption and robbery on a grand scale.

The second wave of anti-epidemic activities in Krochmalna Street took place on 28 and 29 August 1941 during the recurrence of the epidemic and was even more brutal.
A short report of this operation is also in The Warsaw Diary of Adam Czerniakow:
On August 28, 1941 at 4 a.m. functionaries of the Jewish Order Service instructed all residents of Krochmalna Street to be prepared for bathing. The whole of Krochmalna Street from Ciepla to Rynkowa Streets was to be disinfected and its inhabitants bathed.

Residents of this street unfamiliar with disinfection regulations initially thought that they were going to be resettled.
Czerniakow also reports a different type of corruption: "A new industry: a woman who, for money, will take the place of another person at a disinfection steambath."

I don't have much of substance to add to that, but USHMM has some photos of Krochmalna Street (1, 2, 3, 4) at around that time. It looks crowded, but pretty typical for a city. I don't see the pile/s of rubbish.

Incidentally, some photos of Krochmalna show people crossing what appears to be a very meager fence between the Aryan and Jewish sides (5, 6, 7). That's... really something.

I have however seen both a rubbish pile and bathing in this 1942 video of the Warsaw Ghetto. The living conditions vary dramatically from one scene to the next. Here are some timestamps I find noteworthy.

00:01:16 Remarkable footage of Jewish council building and meeting, continuing for several minutes.
00:02:09 Typhus charts posted on the walls.
00:05:52 One of many scenes where carts and a Jewish tram can be seen in action.
00:15:22 One or two rubbish piles being picked over.
00:30:57 Typhus chart close-up.
00:31:19 Bathhouse scene. Undressing, shaving, lice.
00:38:04 Second typhus chart close-up.
00:42:30 Bodies being carted off and buried.
00:49:32 Jews dunking their heads underwater, but this is presumably ritual immersion, not bathing.
00:57:45 Elevated panning shot of a wide area of the ghetto.

Natzweiler-Struthof Crematorium
Spoiler
As at Dachau, this is a crematorium combined with a delousing plant in a single building. A postwar drawing of this building's floorplan is included in Pressac's book The Struthof Album, here. Pressac describes the plan like this:
13. Plan of the crematorium hut.
[Drawn up on the 29 May 1945. The disinfection part is not open to visitors. Many photographs of the shower room have been inscribed as representing the gas chamber, because of the presence of shower heads. Tourist guides also portray it as the shower room for SS-men, bathing their plump bodies in water heated by cremations of skeletal prisoners. The shower and disinfection rooms constituted an area reserved for prisoners and not for the SS; in addition to water heating by the furnace, there was a stove in the southwest corner of the cremation room that took wood or coal, and provided the necessary heat when no incinerations were in progress. At the present time, the room containing urns is in the place of the internees' room (lodging for prisoners working on the furnace) and vice-versa. This bit of historical editing is designed to give the impression that human guinea pigs awaited, right next to the autopsy room, the pleasure of the SS to be taken in for vivisection.]
Although the symmetrical design of the building's rooms is suggestive of a gender split, this is probably not how it was used. Probably the French drafter was correct that the path of travel was a U-shape, circling around the gas room.

Carlo Mattogno states that the gas room here was "no doubt, a Zyklon B disinfestation chamber" (Inside the Gas Chambers, p.217).
Stutthof Delousing Barrack
Spoiler
Best information on this building comes from an inventory of October 1, 1941 (see Concentration Camp Stutthof, pp.17,129). The rooms it listed were:
1. Delousing -- with an autoclave and a delousing boiler
2. Anteroom
3. Bathing room
4. Changing room
5. Laundry -- with various washing appliances and a dryer
6. Roller -- electric and manual

At least one document shows that at Stutthof, "inmates were bathed and deloused prior to departure" to other camps (p.28). This presumably happened in this barrack.
Stutthof Delousing Bunker
Spoiler
Today, this building is referred to as a homicidal "gas chamber" and claimed to be the site of some mass gassings. This is despite the accepted history that it was originally built for delousing. I choose to call it a bunker to differentiate it from the barrack above.

Image

Its design included two doors on opposite walls, an exterior brick stove that piped in hot air, and a small metal chimney hatch on the roof. Mattogno opines that pouring in Zyklon from the roof was necessary because the room was too full to enter with clothing racks inside (p.61).

Pressac noted: "The doors do not seem to be original, since they were missing at the Liberation and there has been modification of the brickwork to adjust to the curved top of the frame" (from p.539 of Auschwitz: Technique). Also that the crematorium was "reconstructed after the war" (p.541).

This bunker was built right next to the crematorium.
Several other delousing facilities are worth mentioning here, but for lack of available info I will keep it brief.

Mauthausen Barrack 25 - This barrack was in roughly the opposite corner from the laundry building already described upthread. Inside was a properly-built Zyklon B disinfestation room equipped with a Degesch Kreislauf (air circulation) device (see Inside the Gas Chambers, p.131). For fumigating clothing.

Gusen Delousing Chamber - For fumigating clothing. This was also properly designed and included a ventilation system, according to surviving operating instructions (p.144).

Sachsenhausen Crematorium - The Soviets attempted to claim that 432,000 people were cremated here, with a large portion of them gassed in a small room equipped with a form of Kreislauf device (pictured in documents at pp.247,248,251.). The museum still upholds the gassing claim. This is unusual because chambers with Kreislauf devices are almost always considered clothing delousing chambers. This building was blown up by the Soviet-occupied government in 1952.

Neuengamme Delousing Building - This building supposedly included a bath, a mortuary, and two delousing chambers (from The Neuengamme and Sachsenhausen Gas Chambers, p.110). Presumably then this was for delousing inmates. I found a photo of the chambers here.

Strasshof Delousing Station - I can't find a copy of the book cited here, so here is Thomas Kues's description of this building from Sobibor, p.170:
[... A] plan of the Entlausungsanstalt at Transit Camp Strasshof shows that deportees entered the building with their clothes on. They undressed inside and handed over their clothes to be deloused, went through a medical assessment, took a shower, and then were handed back their deloused clothes; Franz Puntigam, Hermann Breymesser, Erich Bernfus, Blausäuregaskammern zur Fleckfieberabwehr. Grundlagen, Planung und Betrieb, Sonderveröffentlichung des Reichsarbeitsblattes, Berlin 1943, pp. 56f.
