"Before and after count" proves the Holocaust

Emil Kirkegaard is a notable intelligence researcher who occasionally tries to support the Holocaust Narrative using a big-picture approach. Yesterday he posted a short thread on X which I reproduce here for anyone who wants to debate it.
Given the number of public lies by authorities -- take your pick, COVID counter-measures, some men are women, immigrants don't commit crimes, green energy is cheap etc. -- naturally some people start wondering what other lies (or falsehoods in general) they've been told. The most extreme one would be Holocaust numbers. So how do we know roughly how many Jews died? Well, the simplest method is the before and after count. You start with maps like this one from 1881.

Then you try to figure out what happened to the Jews in each area. The Nazis obviously tried to destroy their records near war's end, the Soviets tried to make them seem worse (almost impossible task), so trying to trace them seems like a sensible simple approach.

At war's end, you then find new counts of the Jews and the difference, minus expectations from other factors (population growth or decline, hunger, disease, migration etc.) is the number killed. Special care has to be taken with double counting. Obviously, Nazis mostly them around so the survivors didn't end up where they started in many cases.
AI summary of academic estimates. You might be tempted to say these are self-serving Jewish scholars, but it seems not so. The estimates from the Jewish ones are about the same as from the German ones.
